Outdoor Classroom and Environmental Garden

The Vincent Outdoor Classroom and Environmental Garden is a unique learning environment located within a central courtyard at Vincent Elementary School, built with the support from the PTA and donations from local businesses and volunteer efforts, it consists of an Arbor and Stage, a Nurse Log Bed, Native Shrub Bed, Pond, Wind Garden, Herb Garden, Compost Bin, Crop Beds, Cistern, Bird Feeders, Rain Gauge and Thermometer.

Students give up recess to move mulch, clean and weed the beds, and plant shrubs, vegetables and flowers. Student work in the garden was documented in an award winning entry to the Rodale Garden Contest. They have done research projects on the quality of the pond water, what type of fish to purchase, and different weed control alternatives. Most recently, they have created a field guide and self-guided walking tour available on iPods for student and community use.
