Online Communities

Places to Create Your Virtual Classroom

Ning is the only online service where you can create, customize, and share your own Social Network for free in seconds. Nings can be private to ensure the safety of a walled garden online experience for students. By January of 2008, over 170,000 Nings have been created with 75% of them in active use.
Ning offers asynchronous forums and areas where members can post a great variety of material including images, videos, blogs and more. Each member creates their own customizable page and can add friends to their network. Members can also create groups within the Ning for focusing on special interests.

Tapped In is a collaborative online professional learning community comprised of over 20,000 educators world-wide. Tapped In offers asynchronous discussion boards and areas where participants can download files and access collections of weblinks.

Moodle is a course management system (CMS) - a free, Open Source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities. You can download and use it on any computer you have handy (including webhosts), yet it can scale from a single-teacher site to a University with 200,000 students.
Moodle offers the ability to create and make available a range of online tools for student use including the ability to post resources, activities, quizzes, surveys, discussion boards, wikis, assignments, and more in a private, members only environment.
